In its Wikipedia entry, Utahime is described as “comedy, romance”. I would definitely add “human drama”. I’ve rarely seen such a simple, yet powerful story about human feelings in their genuine form, a story which conveys joy, thrill, happiness and sadness at the same time. I highly recommend this series, and those who are a little more sensitive will probably end up with their eyes full of tears (I didn’t, but I admit I bit my lip not to). (more…)

No wonder it was a blockbuster when it was first broadcasted in 2001. A very well developed plot, supported by a very good cast and dealing with quite an interesting theme. All these makes it a very delightful series to watch. I liked it especially because it belongs to that category that totally lacks high school stuff and is not addressed to kids-only. Although I’m not quite a fan of J-pop, I must admit that the theme song of the series, Can you keep a secret, performed by Utada Hikaru, matches the series perfectly. (more…)

Big Money

To be honest, after watching the first episode of Big Money, I was tempted to drop this series, as it seemed too boring and spicy-less. Now I can say that I’m glad I didn’t. The plot is quite well organized, evolving naturally towards the climax; and although the ending is very much predictable, there are still some elements of surprise, which can’t be anticipated. Dark, realistic, crude, somehow hopeless. These are only a few words that can describe Ikebukuro West Gate Park, one of the best j-drama series I’ve seen. To me it was a complete surprise, for it was a very intense, unpredictable and unexpected human drama.
